Freshman, Transfer, and Upperclass Scholarships

Freshman Scholarships

UNL Animal Science Freshman Scholarships are awarded to incoming students. Scholastic performance and extracurricular activities in high school, especially those relative to animal science, are taken into consideration. Award recipients are selected during the spring of their senior year in high school and receive the scholarship during their freshmen year at the University. Applications are due February 15, 2009 for current high school seniors. An application form may be downloaded in MS Word . Questions about these scholarships should be directed to Dr. Duane Reese .

Transfer Student Scholarships

UNL Animal Science Transfer Scholarships are provided through funds from Nebraska Cattlemen and other sources. These scholarships are awarded to incoming transfer students from other schools and universities. Applications are due May 1, 2010 for students starting in the 2009 fall semester, and December 1, 2009 for students starting in the 2009 spring semester. Students transferring from another department or college within UNL are not eligible for these scholarships. An application form may be downloaded in MS Word . Upperclass Scholarships

UNL Animal Science Upperclass Scholarships are awarded to current students majoring in Animal Science for their outstanding scholastic achievements. Applications are due March 1, 2009. Scholarship Descriptions

Elton D. and Carrier R. Aberle Animal Science Scholarship
Abe and Carrie Aberle, Madison, Wisconsin, established this endowment, in large part, because of their association with the Department of Animal Science from 1983 to 1998, and also to recognize Dr. Aberle's life-long career in agricultural research and education principally in meat science, animal growth, and animal sciences, and in department and college administration. His career has included an animal sciences faculty position at Purdue University, Department Head of Animal Science at UNL, Associate Director of the Agricultural Research Division at UNL, and Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Awarded to an Animal Science major expressing a desire to pursue a career in the area of food animal production or in any area of industry or science that supports food animal production.

Dr. Charles H. & Beryle I. Adams Scholarship
Beryle Adams, Lincoln, established this freshman scholarship to commemorate the life of her husband, whose career on the faculty of the UNL Animal Science Department spanned 57 years. Charlie taught and mentored thousands of young people in his roles as teacher, meats judging team coach, assistant dean, and professor emeritus.

Frank and Mary Bruning Scholarship
Funded by a donation from Frank and Mary Bruning, Bruning, Nebraska, in support of the freshman scholarship program. Frank, the 2002 Block and Bridle Honoree, has been involved in the livestock and banking business for many years. The Brunings have created many opportunities for young people to stay in livestock production and agriculture.

Darr Feedlot Scholarship
Funded from a donation from Mr. Craig Uden, Darr Feedlot , Cozad , in support of Animal Science programs. Craig is a member of the UNL Animal Science Alumni.

Will Forbes Scholarship
Supported by a fund established in 1972 by Mr. Will Forbes of Forbes Company, Alhambra, California.

Richard and Joyce Frahm Scholarship
Dr. Richard and Mrs. Joyce Frahm, Blacksburg, Virginia, established this endowment in 2006. Dick Frahm was raised on a farm near Lyman, Nebraska, and received his B.S. in Animal Science at Nebraska in 1961 where he was a member of the FarmHouse Fraternity. His M.S. and Ph.D. in Genetics were obtained from North Carolina State University (1965). He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1965-67. Dr. Frahm was a member of the Animal Science faculty at Oklahoma State University from 1967-87 and then was the Animal Science Department Head at Virginia Tech (1987-92). He served as National Program Leader, Animal Genetics, USDA-CSREES, from 1992-2002 at which time he retired. Since 2003, he has been the Executive Vice President of the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. Awarded to Animal Science incoming freshmen or incoming transfer students who are graduates of a Nebraska high school and have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership potential. Preference given to students who were raised on a farm or ranch or are from a rural area of Nebraska.

Dr. Tim & Florence Leon Scholarship
Scholarship for an Animal Science major funded by a donation from the late Dr. Tim & Florence Leon.

Nebraska Cattlemen New Student Scholarship
In 2006, the Nebraska Cattlemen Research and Education Foundation established the Nebraska Cattlemen's Excellence Fund of which a subfund is to be used for scholarships for incoming freshen or transfer Animal Science majors. Preference shall be given to candidates enrolled in the Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars Program or candidates who have demonstrated an interest in beef-related majors.

Oxbow Pet Products Companion Animal Scholarship
Oxbow Pet Products , Murdock, Nebraska, established this scholarship in 2007 for undergraduate Animal Science majors and Food Technology for Companion Animals majors who have expressed a desire to pursue a career in the area of companion animals or pet food technology after graduation.

Richard C. Wahlstrom and LaRayne F. Wahlstrom Scholarship
Dr. Richard and Mrs. LaRayne Wahlstrom, Brookings, South Dakota, established this endowment providing scholarships to Animal Science majors with preference given to incoming freshmen students. Dr. Wahlstrom is a native of Craig, Nebraska, and, although his study at the University of Nebraska was interrupted by service in the U.S. Army, he received his B.S. in Animal Science in 1948. Mrs. LaRayne Steyer Wahlstrom is a University of Nebraska Home Economics graduate. Dr. Wahlstrom's professional career began as a Research Associate with the Merck Institute from 1951 to 1952. The remainder of his career was spent at South Dakota State University where he served as a faculty member and department head of the Department of Animal Science until his retirement in 1988. Dr. Wahlstrom has been very involved in church and community activities.

Wolf Scholarship
Funded by a donation by Jay and Susie Wolf, Wagonhammer Ranches , Albion, in support of the Animal Science Scholarship Program. The Wolf Family have been longtime friends of the University of Nebraska and made the initial gift to build the Wagonhammer Education Center at the Gundmundsen Sandhills Laboratory.

Animal Science Department Freshman Scholarship
Funded from a variety of sources, the Animal Science Department sponsors additional freshman scholarships each year. The number awarded varies from year to year.

Upperclass Scholarships

ABS Global Scholarship
Provided to an undergraduate junior or senior majoring in Animal Science who has an interest in beef or dairy cattle genetics and/or reproduction. The recipient should be involved in livestock-related extracurricular activities and have demonstrated excellent performance in their academic program. Supported by a gift from American Breeders Service.

Baltzell-Agri-Products, Inc. Scholarship
Provided by Mr. Robert Baltzell, Baltzell-Agri-Products, Inc., Omaha, NE. Awarded to an Animal Science major who has completed three semesters at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is interested in pursuing a career in animal agriculture or agri-business.

Maurice E. Boeckenhauer Memorial Scholarship
Dee Boeckenhauer, Wakefield, Nebraska established this endowment to commemorate the life of her husband, Maurice E. Boeckenhauer, and in recognition of his lifelong involvement in lamb and wool production and marketing. Awarded to an undergraduate in the Department of Animal Science with proven academic performance.

Robert Boeckenhauer Memorial Scholarship
Robert Boeckenhauer was a Nebraska livestock producer and a community leader in Wayne, Brown, & Cherry counties. He attended the University of Nebraska for one semester but due to the Great Depression, was not able to complete his education. He was devoted to lifelong learning and valued very highly the short time he spent at the University. In honor of his memory and dedication to education, his children established this scholarship in 1996.

Doane Scholarship
Ted and Alice Doane, Waverly, Nebraska, established this scholarship at the time of Ted's retirement in 1996 as Professor of Animal Science. Dr. Doane was involved in extension, research, teaching, and international activities during his 41 years with the University. He taught 12 different courses at UNL, Ataturk University in Turkey, and Kabul University in Afghanistan. He advised over 1,000 students and taught over 3,000 students during his tenure at the University.

Harry J. LaToush Scholarship
Harry LaToush, Scott City, Kansas, established an endowment to support, in part, students enrolled in the Feedlot Management Program. Mr. LaToush graduated from the University of Nebraska with an M.S. in Animal Science and had a distinguished career in feedlot consulting.

Lincoln Coca-Cola Bottling Company Scholarship
Supported by an endowment established by the Lincoln Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Awarded to an undergraduate student in Animal Science who has satisfactorily completed one academic year. Preference is given to students with interest in poultry science and the poultry industry.

Dr. Robert H. Hatch Scholarship
Toni Stroup Hatch established this scholarship in 2006 in memory of her husband, Robert Hatch, of Frisco, Texas. Bob completed his M.S. in Ruminant Nutrition from the University of Nebraska in 1962 and after completing his Ph.D. at Wyoming, he returned to Nebraska and served as Beef Specialist at the Panhandle Research & Extension Center in the late 60's and early 70's. During his career, he was also on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and held numerous agribusiness positions including Executive Vice President of the Distillers' Feed Research Council from 1984 until his retirement in 1996. This scholarship is awarded to an Animal Science undergraduate who has demonstrated financial need. First preference is given to graduates of a Dallas-Fort Worth area high school or who have parents located in that area.

William J. and Hazel J. Loeffel Scholarship
William and Hazel Loeffel, Lincoln, Nebraska, established this fund in 1948 for outstanding undergraduate students majoring in Animal Science. The gift is in honor and recognition of the many years of devoted service of William J. Loeffel to the University of Nebraska. Prof. Loeffel served as Chair of the Department of Animal Science from 1938-1959.

Robert J. Holmes Memorial Scholarship
Funded by a donation from Adair Holmes in memory of her husband. Mr. Holmes was an Animal Science major in the College of Agriculture and graduated in 1948.  He was a member of the AGR fraternity and went on to join the Army.  His entire career was spent in Seward where he was in partnership in a fertilizer business.  Mr. Holmes was a gentle man who loved people.  He would be proud to help another young man or woman pursue a career in agriculture. 

Nutrition Service Associates Scholarship
Nutrition Service Associates , Greeley, Colorado, provides this scholarship for an Animal Science major with an interest in the feedlot industry and/or ruminant nutrition and strong involvement in extracurricular and leadership activities. The recipients must have junior status as of the spring semester prior to the fall that the scholarship becomes effective.

Parr Family Student Support Fund
Animal Science majors participating in poultry science classes, research or related activities with demonstrated academic excellence and a sincere desire to participate in the poultry industry following graduation.

Art & Ruth Raun Scholarship
Funded by a donation from Dr. Art and Mrs. Ruth Raun, Elbert, Colorado, in support of Animal Science programs. Art, a native Nebraskan and a B.S. graduate of the UNL Animal Science Department, had a long and distinguished career in the animal nutrition industry.

Chris and Sarah Raun Memorial Scholarship
The Chris and Sarah Raun Memorial Scholarship fund was established by Ned S. and Esther B. Raun to commemorate the contributions to the advancement of educational values by the donors' parents, Chris and Sarah Raun, Minden, Nebraska. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student majoring in Animal Science.

Walter A. and Alice V. Rockwell Scholarship
Alice Rockwell established this scholarship in 1984 to honor the memory of her husband, Walter Rockwell, and to recognize their lifetime involvement in the purebred Duroc industry and pork production. The Walter A. and Alice V. Rockwell Scholarship is awarded to outstanding junior and senior students in the Department of Animal Science.

Frank J. and Shirley Sibert Scholarship
Funded by a donation from Frank and Shirley Sibert, Valentine, in support of the Animal Science scholarship program. Frank, the 2004 Block & Bridle Honoree, has served the livestock industry for over 50 years as a rancher, banker, cattle feeder, county agent, and through many other roles. The Siberts have committed innumerable hours and significant funding in support of scholarship programs for young people.

Max and Ora Mae Stark Scholarship
Ora Mae Stark, Sutherland, Nebraska, established the Max and Ora Mae Stark Scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student majoring in Animal Science and preference is given to a resident of Lincoln, Frontier or Hayes counties, Nebraska.

D.V. and Ernestine Stephens Memorial Scholarship
Established by Mr. Stephens and is intended to be used for the benefit of the Department of Animal Science. Mr. Stephens graduated with a B.S. from the Department of Animal Husbandry in 1919 and spent his career in the real estate business in Lincoln.

Dwight F. and Minnie L. Stephens Scholarship
Minnie Stephens, Lincoln, Nebraska established the Dwight F. Stephens Memorial Fund to commemorate the life of her husband, an accomplished agriculturalist and advocate for young people. Mr. Stephens served as Director of the USDA Ag Research Station in El Reno, Oklahoma, from 1949-1973. He came to the University of Nebraska in 1974 where he served as Academic Coordinator and Instructor of Beef Production for the Japanese Ag Training Program until 1987.

Arthur W. and Viola Thompson Scholarship
Awarded to outstanding second semester sophomore or junior Animal Science majors. Established by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Thompson in 1947. Arthur Thompson was a nationally recognized beef cattle industry leader and livestock auctioneer. His name was added to the Nebraska Hall of Fame in 1991 and his bust is displayed in the Nebraska State Capitol.

Thomas H. Wake, III Scholarship
This scholarship is to promote high scholarship and leadership among Animal Science students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. It is awarded to a student during their junior year to be used during their senior year of study. Tom and Martha Wake of Seward, Nebraska, established this fund in 1947 and it is being continued by their son, Thomas.
