Natural Resources, at the Universidad Catolica de Temuco.
--Bates, Jared Scott (Rodger Johnson)–Jared is Associate Research Scientist at the Oklahoma Medical Researech Foundation in Oklahoma City.
--Loza, Pablo Luis (Galen Erickson & Terry Klopfenstein)–Pablo is working in a post-doc position at Louisiana State University.
--In addition, Joe Baumert, one of our MS graduates, received his PhD in Food Science & Technology under the direction of Steve Taylor.

Outstanding Dairyman Award
Kudos to the faculty and staff of the UNL Dairy Unit for receiving a 2008 Outstanding Dairyman Award from the State of Nebraska Department of Agriculture. The award is in recognition for maintainint a very low bacteria and somatic cell count in their milk for the past year.

Courtney Jolly was named the Big 12 Diver of the Week on Wednesday Nebraska diver Courtney Jolly named the Big 12 Diver of the Week on Wednesday for competition through Nov. 24, the league office announced. The senior from Plantation, Fla., secured the award after earning an outstanding showing at both the Minnesota Diving Invitational and the Husker Invitational.
Jolly competed in a total of six diving events in the Minnesota Diving Invitational and the Husker Invitational, taking first place four times and second place twice in those six events. Jolly also set career bests in the three meter (319.42 at Minnesota Invite) and platform (250.25 at Husker Invite) during the time.
Jolly won the one and three meter dives at the Minnesota Invite, with scores of 283.50 and 319.42, respectively, while taking second on the platform with a score of 221.47. The following weekend, Jolly won the one meter (274.45) and platform (250.25) and finished second on the three meter (307.80) at the nine-team Husker Invitational.
The honor marks Jolly’s second career Big 12 Diver of the Week award, as she also won it almost exactly a year ago on Nov. 22, 2007.
Jolly has finished in the top three in all 10 events she has entered this season, including six first-place finishes.

Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars Certification Program Applications are due November 10. The purpose of this program is to develop graduates who will be future leaders of the beef industry. The program is a unique four year certification program for UNL students and is part of a greater effort to improve beef education and research in the state of Nebraska. Congratulations to all faculty members and students who have been recently recognized. At the November 2 Gamma Sigma Delta Banquet: Rick Rasby received the Extension Award of Merit, Bryan Reiling received the Teaching Award of Merit, Dennis Brink competed his term as President, and Wan-Ling Hsu was initiated as a new member. Matt Spangler received $4,000 from the American Angus Association for his project entitled, "Trends in Mature Weight and Analysis of Residual Weight." The Pork Checkoff, Pioneer Hi-Bred and PIC will award 19 scholarships to college students around the US as part of their strategy to develop the pork industry's human capital for the future. The 19 recipients hail from 14 different colleges and 7 different swine-related fields of study. A UNL Animal Science major, Emily Arkfeld, advised by Steve Jones, is one of the recipients and is the only meat science area of study recipient. The 2008-09 scholarship is $2,500.

UNL's Chapter of the American Association of Bovine Practicioners won first place in a competition at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners' annual meeting. The club, composed of veterinary students in the vet med program,was honoerd for a case report it submitted to the AABP Student Case Presentation Competition. The report summarized club members' findings in a project in which they studied reproductive health problems at a dairy. The report was one of 11 selected for presentation at the annual meeting in North Carolina. Students Jennafer Glaesemann and Jeffry Faimon, both 2007 Animal Science BS graduates, gave the winning presentation. At the Nebraska Extension Fall Conference held in Grand Island on October 22-24, Gary Zoubek received the Chester I. Walters "Extra Mile" Award.

For those of you who don't know, Little Ak-Sar-Ben is the Block & Bridle Club's annual show for UNL students who want to get some experience working with cattle, hogs, sheep and horses. Participants will show former 4-H animals that are being kept in the Animal Science building. Participants can show as either a Novice or an Experienced showman and they can show Novice for one animal and Experienced for another animal. Also, everyone who wins a species in either Novice or Experienced will be put into a round robin contest to decide an overall winner. The event will be held November 14. There is a $10 charge to compete, but is is free for anyone to come and watch. It is open to any CASNR student and will be held in the R.B. Warren Arena beginning at 7:00 p.m. Participants will be able to work with their animals before the contest from 5:00-9p.m. on November 13 and 14, we ask that they either bring their own supplies or that they share with other participants. There will be prizes for the top showmen (per species and for round robin) in both the Novice and Experienced categories and B&B will provide pizza and drinks for the evening.

The Fall Coffee with IANR Administrators will be October 8, 8:30 am in the commons. The Animal Science Department-wide Potluck will be held in the Arboretum, west of the Dental College at noon on Wednesday, October 8. Please bring a covered dish. Dr. Matthew Spangler will present the Animal Science Interdisciplinary Seminar on October 15 at noon: “Update on the Beef Scholars Program--where are we now--where are we going?” Elizabeth (Beth) Maricle recently began duties as Extension Educator in Adams County. Beth earned her BS in 2006 from UNL with a major in Animal Science and a minor in ALEC. She then received her MS in Animal Science in August of 2008 from the University of Missouri. Beth’s current position is Adams County Extension Educator where she will focus on 4-H Youth Development.

The 2008 Husker Beef Nutrition Conference will be held on Friday, November 7, at the UNL Ag Research and Development Center near Mead. This is the 7th year for this annual meeting targeting nutritionists. Topics to be covered are economics, distillers grains research, and some production issues such as calf-feds vs yearlings, E. coli O157:H7, and new research. UNL - 2008 Ak-Sar-Ben Champion Team! On September 27, the Livestock Judging Team competed at the First Annual Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Judging Contest in Omaha. UNL had an outstanding day on the way to being named Champion Team. In Sheep judging, the team finished second. Shantille Kruse was second high point individual overall and Tony Roubal finished tenth. In Swine judging, the team finished first. Individually, Kruse was fifth high point individual and Roger Morgan was tenth. In Cattle judging, the team finished second. Individually, Roubal was fourth high point individual, Kruse was seventh and Annie Doerr was ninth. In Oral Reasons, the team finished first. Individually, Shantille Kruse was third high point individual overall, Doerr was fifth and Roubal was seventh. The team finished first out of seven overall. Individually Shantille Kruse finished second high individual overall, Tony Roubal was third and Annie Doerr was fourteenth. Looking forward, the team will begin preparing for the Premier Stockman in Frankfort, IN on October 17. The senior team will compete at two more contests this fall to finish their collegiate judging experience; the American Royal in Kansas City and the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, both will be held in November.
