Nebraska State Fair Swine Judging Contest
- When: 8:00 am – 12:30 pm, Sunday August 30, 2009
- Where: 4-H Swine Barn (Nebraska State Fair Grounds)
- Cost: Admission to state fair grounds ($4.00 if pre-registered by August 21, 2009)
- Who: Two divisions 4-H/FFA or Collegiate
- Register: On site or via e-mail (mellicott2@unl.edu)
Rules: Teams will consist of 4 members in both divisions. The top 3 scores of the youth division will count and all four of the collegiate team members will count. Each county or college will be able to enter as many teams or individuals as they desire.
Contest: 6 total classes (3 breeding, 3 market), 2 sets of questions, NO REASONS CLASSES
Awards: To the top three individuals and top team overall for each division.

3rd Annual Nebraska State Fair Swine Contest
On August 24, 2008 the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Livestock Judging Team along with Nebraska State Fair sponsored the 3rd Annual Nebraska State Fair Swine Judging Contest in Lincoln, NE. More than 80 contestants participated in the event. This year’s contest was the largest yet, with three divisions that included Senior College, Junior College and 4-H/FFA.
Contestants evaluated three classes of breeding gilts and three classes of market hogs. In addition, contestants were asked ten questions about one market hog and one breeding gilt class. In all, the contestants represented 10 different judging programs and five states.
In the 4-H/FFA Division Landon Kalloff earned high individual honors, with Evan Ibach and Justin Taubenheim rounding out the top three. New this year, the top three individuals in the 4-H/FFA division received a year subscription to the Seedstock Edge. Buffalo County, Nebraska was this year’s champion team. Team members included Alec Ibach, Evan Ibach, Justin Tabenheim and Travis Line. Each team member and the team coached received a hog pipe donated by the UNL Livestock Judging Team .
In the Junior College Division Josh Johnson of Casper College walked away with the top honor. Two of his teammates rounded out the top three and Casper College was the top team overall. The top three individuals and the high team overall received plaques from the Nebraska State Fair.
In the Senior College Division Andy Platner of Iowa State University claimed the top spot. Also, ISU was the top team overall. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln was the Reserve Champion Team. Individually, Jason Warner lead the team with a 5th place overall finish. Annie Doerr was 7th, Kyle Dorn was 9th and Garret Koester was 10th. The top three individuals and the high team overall received plaques from the Nebraska State Fair.
