Level IV Study Guide
This study guide is designed to prepare 4-H'ers to pass the Advanced Horseman level. Questions were taken from the Nebraska 4-H Horse Project Manual (EC 2-91-76), Nebraska 4-H Horse Show and Judging Guide (4H373) and Horse Science. It is recommended the 4-H'er become familiar with the information on the study guide prior to taking the skills portion of this level.
1. What is the temperature, pulse and respiration rate of a healthy horse? A sick horse?
2. Where should the temperature, pulse and respiration rate be taken on a horse?
3. What is the difference between an IM and IV injection? Where should each be given?
4. What feedstuffs, commonly used for horses, are high in energy?
5. What feedstuffs, commonly used for horses, are high in protein?
6. What does it cost to feed a horse per day? Per year?
7. How might a horse's feeding program changeover the course of a year to correspond to differences in the amount of work or changes in the weather?
8. How and when might the feeding program be adjusted for a broodmare?

• Essentials needed in a first aid kit and the purpose of each.
• Where to give injections to horses.
• Proper leg wrapping technique and how to apply a bandage to a horse's lower leg.
• Cost, amounts fed, and changes made over a year in the feeding program of an adult working horse and broodmare.
