Level III Study Guide

This study guide is designed to prepare 4-H'ers to pass the Horseman III level. Questions were taken from the Nebraska 4-H Horse Project Manual (EC.2-91-76), Nebraska 4-H Horse Show and Judging Guide (4H373J and Horse Science. It is recommended the 4-H'er become familiar with the information on the study guide prior to taking the written and skills portion of this level.

1. At what age does a horse have its permanent teeth?

2. When a "hook" has developed on the upper corner incisor, how old is the horse?

3. What are milk teeth? At what age does the horse have a full set of milk teeth?

4. At what age do the central' permanent teeth start to come in?

5. At what age .do the central milk teeth appear?

6. How often should a horse be de-wormed? What are the different methods of de-worming a horse?

7. Describe the horse's leg action (foot-fall patterns) at the following gaits:

a. walk
b. trot
c. pace
d. lope/canter (each lead)

8. What yearly vaccinations should an adult horse receive? When should each of these vaccina­tions be given?

9. What does a heavily parasite-infested horse look like?

10. What is Galvyns Groove? When does is appear?

11. Describe the life cycle of the bot. When is it possible to break this life cycle?

12. Define "floating" of horses' teeth. When should this be done?

13. What are the five main nutrients in feed?

14. What are roughages? List at least five commonly fed to horses.

15. What are concentrates? List at least two commonly fed to horses.

16. Outline a disease prevention program for a horse.

17. What is laminitis (founder)? List at least four causes of laminitis. What are the signs a horse has developed laminitis (foundered)?

18. What is navicular disease? How should a navicular horse be managed or maintained? Can it be cured?
