NOVEMBER 2008 EVENTS
The annual Block & Bridle Kids’ Day event was held Friday, November 7 in the Animal Science Arena area.
It was a very windy, cold day and only eight groups of daycare, preschool and elementary schools braved the weather, but all were given “goodie bags” stuffed by Block & Bridle members for approximately 135 children.
Animals on display included horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, fowl and mice. Children and caregivers had the opportunity to see and learn about animals. They especially enjoyed sitting on the bright red tractor that the Larson Tractor Museum provided.
Those organizations providing resources and donating items for the childrens’ gift bags were: Nebraska Department of Agriculture, Poultry & Egg Division, Nebraska Pork Producers, Nebraska Beef Council, Soybean Board, Corn Board, Wheat Board, Larson Tractor Museum, Animal Science Department and Equine Department.
Dr. Rick Rasby was club advisor for the event. B&B Chairperson of the event Jake Geis (Maskell) was assisted by many B&B members in reception and the arena areas: Garret Koester (Wellfleet), Kelsey Maris (Prague), Rebecca Engler (Nevada, IA), Amanda Elwess (Chadron), Sarah Peterson (Ord), Katrina Hackel (Ord), Jared Schramm (Moville, IA), Anna Geis (Maskell), Jeffrey Epp (Henderson) and Annie Doerr (Creighton).
On Friday the 14th of November many CASNR students met in the R. B. Warren Arena in the UNL Animal Science building to compete in Block & Bridle’s annual Little Ak-Sar-Ben livestock show. The competitors were allowed three days to work with their animals and were also allowed to work with any species that they wanted to show of the four species being exhibited. The show started around 7pm with the Horse show being judged by Megan Boone and was followed in order by beef, sheep, and finally swine all of which were judged by Matt Spangler a professor at UNL. We then took the champions in both the Experience and Novice Division for each species and had a Round Robin show off to decide the overall grand champion. The winners for Experienced were: Horse-Bailey Kobbs, Beef-Jessica Clowser, Sheep- Jeremy Haack, and Swine- Kyle Clymer. The Champions for Novice were: Horse-Nick Hansen, Beef-Emily Arkfeld, Sheep-Ashley Blum, and Swine-Asia Sabatka. The Reserve Champions for Experienced were: Horse-Asia Sabatka, Beef-Corey Cable, Sheep-Asia Sabatka, and Swine-Patricia Bohaboj. The Reserve Champions for Novice were: Horse- Rebecca Engler, Beef-Ashley Blum, Sheep-Rebecca Engler, and Swine-Chase McGrath. The Round Robin Champions were Experienced-Jeremy Haack, and Novice-Asia Sabatka. The Round Robin Reserve Champions were Experienced-Kyle Clymer, and Novice-Emily Arkfeld. Overall I thought that this year’s show went very well and would like to thank our judges and all of our exhibitors. [Reported by Andrew Uden]
