Paul Engler (51 BS) is the 2009 recipient of the CASNR Henry Beachell Distinguished Alumni Award. A dinner honoring Mr. Engler was held September 11 as part of the CASNR AA festivities.
Jeffrey M. Schroeder, a senior advised by Steve Jones, is recipient of the 2009-10 $2,500 DeBenedetti Memorial Scholarship from the National Meat Association Scholarship Foundation.
Amanda Pflasterer, an Animal Science senior advised by Kathy Anderson, was named Miss Burwell Rodeo 2009 during the rodeo on July 24.

--Bryan Reiling’s NACTA Teacher Fellow Award received on June 19 at the annual meeting in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Lisa Karr-Lilienthal’s application for an eXtension Companion Animal Community of Practice has been approved. Lisa will serve as co-leader with Amy Fischer from the University of Illinois.
--The IIC (International Ingredients Corporation) Graduate Student Pinnacle Award received by Huyen TB Tran (Phil Miller, Advisor) on June 17 in St. Louis.
--A plaque presented to the Department by The American Youth Horse Council in appreciation for hosting the 2009 National Youth Horse Leaders’ Symposium on March 27-29.
The Center for Biotechnology has awarded Ningxia Lu (Andrea Cupp, Advisor) a 2009-10 Milton E. Mohr Fellowship.
At the Western Sectional Meetings of the American Society of Animal Science held June 16-18 in Fort Collins, Colorado:
--Dan Larson's paper received the third place award in the applied animal science competition. The paper is entitled: “Estrous synchronization increases early calving frequency, which enhances steer progeny value.” D.M. Larson and R.N. Funston.
Cassie Sell, Miss Pinto of Nebraska, represented Nebraska at the Pinto World Championship Horse Show in Tulsa (June 8-15). Cassie was first runner-up in the queen competition, placed 7th overall in Junior Amateur English Pleasure, and placed 9th in the Junior Amateur Western Pleasure.
At the Reciprocal Meats Conference held June 21-24 in Rogers, Arkansas:
--Larry Hand (PhD ‘86), Director of Process Improvement for Tyson Foods, received the American Meat Science Association Meat Processing Award.
--Mindy Brashears, a former faculty member in Food Science & Technology who worked closely with Dennis Burson, received the American Meat Science Association Achievement Award.
The Nebraska Cattlemen Research & Education Foundation has awarded 2009-10 scholarships. Winners will be recognized during the NC Midyear Meeting June 18 in West Point. The following UNL Animal Science majors were among the seven recipients:
Andrew Uden (Bryan Reiling, Advisor) - $1,000 Donavan Yoachim Memorial Scholarship.
Zachary Adam (Chris Calkins, Advisor) - $1,000 Robert E. Lute II Scholarship.
Derek Schroeder (Steve Jones, Advisor) - $1,000 Nebraska Cattlemen Beef Pit Scholarship.
Mark Quiring (Dennis Brink, Advisor) - $500 Martin Viersen Range Management/Conservation Scholarship

CASNR Class Acts. The Spring issue of the CASNR Class Acts has been distributed. If you did not receive a copy, you may obtain one from your suite secretary. The publication has includes the following Animal Science-related articles:
--Ryan Brewster (Animal Science Graduate) and the assistance he has given to farmers and cooperatives in Iraq and Afghanistan.
--The Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars Program.
--Courtney Jolly (Animal Science Senior) and her accomplishments in diving competition.
--The “Current Topics in Animal Agriculture” new course that is taught by Jeff Keown.
Jim Pillen, an Animal Science Alum, will be receiving the CASNR Alumni Achievement Award at the CASNR Week Recognition Banquet at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 19th
Makram Geha will receive the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agrculture Graduate Student Teaching Award of Merit Certificate.
Mahmoud Masa'deh will receive a $750 Distillers Grains Scholarship. The award also includes travel expenses to attend the Distillers Grains Symposium, April 22-23, Des Moines IA, where he will present a poster and be recognized as a scholarship recipient.
Monte Stauffer was selected the 2009 Equine Honoree by the Nebraska Horse Council.
14 New Members of the 08-09 NE Ag Youth Council have been selected.
These students will coordinate numerus ag learning experiences for NE youth. Six Animal Science NAYC members are:

Animal Science Students Honored at GWIS February Forum
For over 30 years, science departments at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have come together to honor excellent junior and senior undergraduate women. Emily Arkfeld, UNL Animal Science Junior from Dunbar - On March 7 at the annual business meeting of the National Pork Producers Council, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange awarded scholarships to four college students who intend to pursue careers in the pork industry. NPPC administers the scholarship selection process. Amoung the four recipients of the $2,500 Lois Britt Memorial Pork Industry Scholarships, named after the late NPPC vice president, is Emily Arkfeld, a UNL Animal Science junior from Dunbar who is advised by Steve Jones.
Dennis Brink - received a certificate of recognition for contributions to students by the UNL Teaching Council and UNL Parents Association at their annual recognition ceremony on January 30.
Matt Spangler - received a $500 travel award from the IANR Research Travel Selection Committee for his participation in the April Beef Improvement Fderation annual meeting in Sacramento.
Chris Calkins - has been asked by Harvy Perlman to serve on a faculty committee to review and respond to the external committee's report on Life Sciences in IANR. Chris invites faculty to offier their guidance as things go forward. He will ne receiving a copy of the report wil have a chance to contribute to the faculty reponse.

Lisa Karr-Lilienthal's appointment was changed from Assistant Professor of Practice to a tenure-leading Assistant Professor effective January 1.
Karla (Hollingsworth)Jenkins has accepted UNL's offer of the Cow-Calf/Range Management Systems Specialist position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Karla will be officed at the Panhandle Research & Extension Centyer in Scottsbluff and Animal Science is her academic home department. Karla will begin her new duties on July 1.
Animal Science Graduates honored by UNL Graduate Studies - The following Animal Science graduate students will be among the students honored by the UNL Graduate Studies at a reception on Febrary 4. Each of the students received an Honorable Mention in their Award category:

Chris Calkins received $25,250 from the Nebraska Beef Council for his project entitled "Tenderness of Beef from Cattle Fed Wet Distiller's Grains Plus Solubles and Supplemented with Vitamin E."
Sheila Scheideler received $18,000 from Zinpro Corporation in support of her poultry research program.
Phil Miller received $43,500 from Pioneer for his project entitled, "Evaluation of Soybean Meal."
Sheila Scheideler received funding from the ARD selection committee for the Mussehl Poultry Research Endowment for the following projects:
"The Effect of an Enzyme Cocktail of Xylanase, Amylase, and Pretease and Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles in Laying Hen Rations: Nutrient Digestibility, Gut Viscosity and Microbial Population of the Gut" -- $25,000
"The Effect of Social and Environmental Enrichments on Behavior and Welfare of Turkey Hens" -- $24,604
At the November 2 Gamma Sigma Delta Banquet:
